As you may know it took about a decade for the industry to reach this point of maturity. Still considered as quite young and promising, the motosurfing market currently counts a (very) small handful of brands actually able to produce and deliver efficient and reliable boards. A great number of optimistic adventurers tried, are trying and will try to launch their own brand and technology, but what really matters to us is the thin boundary between failure and success. We sincerely find both stages fascinating, as one cannot be achieved without the other. Yet, we chose to tackle this technical journey with some positive vibes and the benefits of 3D printing.
3D PRINTING OR ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING
Also called additive manufacturing, 3D printing is a process of making three-dimensional solid objects from a digital file. In an additive process, an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until it is complete. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.

We got in touch with Richtig Druck, a German company based in Hamburg, expert in Prototyping, mini-models and anything related to 3D printing; « Offering the full end-to-end spectrum from development and optimization of digital models towards final print of the solution. »
“We worked on the impeller. The manufacturer we worked for wanted to experiment with different shapes and weight was also in focus. Until then, they used aluminium machining.
At first, we scanned the existing aluminium part but later on designed the 3D model in CAD from scratch.
The big advantages of 3D printing is that basically any shape that you can think of can be manufactured unlike machining or molding where you have certain technological limitations. This was useful for a complex shape with multiple bend surfaces such as the impeller.
Especially during design and test phase, 3D printing is very interesting as changes can be done quickly. Adapting the shape in CAD and production of a prototype can be done in less than a week. The material Polyamid, which was used is very stable and reasonably priced.
We worked as a prototyping partner in regards to 3D-design, advising our customer on 3D printing technology and materials (there are several different printing processes and materials available) and finally production of the parts. The plan is to also incorporate 3D-printed parts into their serial production.”
