Startup EWAKE GERMANY GmbH is stirring the waters. Deploying the Solid Edge solution helped the producer of the world’s smallest and fastest jetboards speed up product development, enhance collaboration, and expand quickly.
How best to scale a startup and accelerate great design? Such was the predicament facing EWAKE GERMANY, the producer of electric jetboards based in Southwest Germany, near Mannheim. As demand for their electric 3-jet boards grew, CEO Peter Ruwe sought out a more streamlined approach to designing and integrating their boards’ components.
Peter Ruwe found Solid Edge, Solid Edge FLOEFD, and Solid Edge Resources for Startups, a foolproof combination for a growing company. With it, EWAKE GERMANY cut time to market by 35% and upped energy efficiency by 10%.
Fully Digitalizing Models Streamline Design Process
That a jet board requires meticulous engineering and design is something Peter Ruwe firmly believes in. “What makes our boards special is that they are fully made of carbon,” the CEO explains. “At first, we made the board the traditional way – by hand.” It became quickly apparent, however, that to bring their designs to the high quality that their customers expect, they needed to digitalize.
Solid Edge from Siemens offers CAD modeling, wiring, flow simulation, and CAM. EWAKE GERMANY uses a 3D scanner to capture the physical model and create a digital polygon. Solid Edge then unifies the lines, transforming the scan into a digital model. “The software was important for designing and creating electrical diagrams. We use it for the mold, electrical wiring, schematics, and also the batteries,” Peter Ruwe adds. With Solid Edge, they cut time to market from three months to just six weeks.
Teamcenter Share Shortens Development Time
The CAD tool was but one part of the equation. Efficient collaboration through the secure cloud based Teamcenter Share platform was another. After test runs are conducted on the lake, EWAKE GERMANY quickly passes the results on to Faserschmiede, the company who produces their carbon fiber parts and supports them with CAD design and production.
“We used the Solid Edge CAD data directly in our own CAD and CAM software. Teamcenter Share lets us coordinate and implement design changes with the customer at short notice,” Faserschmiede CEO Marco Kasper explains.
Flow simulator Solid Edge FLOEFD “improved our jets’ energy efficiency by 10%,” Peter Ruwe adds.
We are back in action and today we meet the team behind EWAKE, a new electric jetboard from Germany. Their claim “Greed for speed” is bold and their new board is fully hand made and fully customized – a very unusual shape with 2 or 3 jets. Lets find out more!
Solid Edge Program Supports Startups
The EWAKE GERMANY CEO first came into contact with Siemens through the Solid Edge Resources for Startups program. New companies are given access premium software and resources, online training, and community. EWAKE GERMANY was put in touch with Technical University of Munich. “This only works with a partner at your side who doesn’t just sponsor free licenses,” says Peter Ruwe.
Greed For Speed
EWAKE GERMANY’s electric boards are game-changing. They are powerful, light, saltwater- and sun-resistant, they can travel up to 50 km/h. They emit no air pollution and much less noise than conventional jetboards. “Solid Edge was key for us. I am proud that we cracked this thing,” says Peter Ruwe. “The shortest board with the best speed. That’s why we came up with the motto, ‘Greed for speed.’ That says it all.”
